Maidenhead is located within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. It lies on the River Thames 25 miles west of London.
Maidenhead has a population of around 60 000 people. In terms of it’s industries, Maidenhead is located in England’s ‘silicon corridor’ along the M4 motorway. The majority of the residents of Maidenhead are commuters, travelling to London, Slough and Reading. The main industries in Maidenhead are computer software, plastics, pharmaceuticals, printing and telecommunications.
The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has recently set up the Partnership for the Regeneration of Maidenhead which includes planning to improve the town centre, amenities and facilities for the community. There will also be plans for New Homes in Maidenhead.
The name of Maidenhead is thought to date back to Saxon times. It means in the strictest sense to refer to the busy riverside area where there is a â'new wharfâ' or â'maiden hytheâ'. The area of the town centre known as â'South Ellingtonâ' is recorded in the Doomsday Book.
In the 13th century, a bridge was built across the river to replace the ferry and the Great Western Rd was diverted in order to make use of it. The building of the bridge led to an increase in visitors as it became a stopping point for coaches on the journey between London and Bath, this then meant a large number if inns on the high street. The current bridge was built in 1777 and is known as a local landmark.
King Charles I met his children for the last time at the Greyhound Inn on the High Street before his execution. The inn no longer exists and is now a branch of NatWest bank, there is now a plaque on this building to commemorates this meeting. It was during this visit that the townspeople strew the flowers as he was marched to meet them. Thomas Fairfax, the local Parliamentarian commander, was so touched by the dignity of the occasion that he allowed the two boys to return with their father to spend the remainder of his incarceration with him in a state of gentlemanly house arrest.
Maidenhead today still retains the charm that earned it the nickname â'Jewel of the Thamesâ' but has shed the decadent image it gained in Edwardian Times. It was during Edwardian times that its risqué reputation was earned. The town was a place of recreation for the members of the guards club, whose lady friends lodged in close proximity to the riverside quarters of the officers.
Maidenhead is surrounded by pretty villages, parks and open spaces offering walkers and cyclists hours of pleasure. If you prefer messing about in boats, there is no better place to explore than the Maidenhead stretch of the Thames.
