New Homes in Barnet, Greater London

Barnet is a borough of North London. Barnet as a settlement dates back to the 12th century. It is an area that has had much development, including the building of many new homes. National developers George Wimpey and Bryant Homes have both built new developments in the area.

There is a great amount of history in the area including the Battle of Barnet in 1471, where King Edward IV led his soldiers to kill the Earl of Warwick, Richard Neville and his brother the 1st Marquess of Montagu, John Neville. There is also an ancient horse fair, which dates back to 1588. In Saxon times, Barnet was part of an extensive area of woodland known as Southaw, which belonged to the Abbey of St Albans. Throughout history, Barnet was also known as “High Barnet” as it was thought to be the highest ground between London and York. It was also a well-known resting point on the Great North Road, which went all the way to Edinburgh. Historical buildings in the area include St John the Baptist Church, which was built in 1560 by John de la Moote.

As well as having new homes in Barnet there has also been development of the local shopping facilities, including the Spire Shopping Centre which houses a choice of high street stores and specialist shops. There are also cafes, a florist and a bakery. For more choice, Brent Shopping Centre is located nearby and has the added benefit of free parking. It was opened in 1976 and was the first shopping experience of its kind in the UK.

Other points of interest for homebuyers who are looking for new homes in Barnet are the Odeon cinema, Barnet Museum, the recreational park and the Ravenscroft Park, all of which are located nearby. There is also a range of public houses and restaurants in High Barnet, including Italian, Chinese and Thai restaurants. A choice of fast food outlets and a local pancake house can also be found there. For art, dance and music, the All Saints Art Centre offers a wide choice of events and activities. It is situated on Oakleigh Road North and is one of the largest licensed premises in Barnet.

Sport enthusiasts many be interested in the local football team, Barnet FC, they have played in the Coca Cola League 2. Both the football team and Barnet Cricket Club play their games at the Underhill Stadium. There is also the local athletics club, which is called Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers.

For education in the area there is a choice of primary and secondary schools, including some independent schools. Barnet College provides further education in the area, with one of the main campuses located on Wood Street.

Barnet also has excellent transport links, with a London Underground station in High Barnet, which is on the Northern Line. The First Capital Connect bus service operates in the area and links to overground railway stations in Hadley Wood and Oakleigh Park.
