Nottinghamshire once thrived on lace making and then on coal mining but in recent years many pits have been decommissioned. Now Nottinghamshire lists cereals, cattle, sheep, light engineering, footwear, limestone, ironstone and oil as it's main products.
Nottingham is the largest conurbation in the East Midlands and in 2006 Nottingham had a city population of 286,400. This figure excludes many places that most people consider to be Nottingham, such as Carlton, Gedling and West Bridgford. The Greater Nottingham area which also includes Ilkeston, Long Eaton and Eastwood, has a population of 666,358. Nottingham is close to the M1 motorway and major roads. Nottingham's legendary hero was Robin Hood and the successors his historic adversary the Sheriff of Nottingham are still elected annually from Nottingham city councillors. Among Nottingham's important historical sites are the unique labyrinth of caves under the city, the splendid mansion that is now Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery.
