Historically a mining town, Llanelli grew significantly in the 18th and 19th century due to coal mining and the tinplate industry. By the latter half of the 19th century Llanelli became such a significant regional producer of tin it was christened ‘Tinopolis'. St Elli shopping centre, the 100-year-old market and East Gate's tasty cocktail of varied restaurants lend the traditional town a contemporary edge.
