The beautiful historic market town of Shaftesbury in Dorset is perched high on a hill overlooking the Blackmore Vale – truly one of the most scenic locations for a holiday in England. On sunny days, the panoramic views from Park Walk and Castle Hill can be spectacular.

Shaftesbury is home to the particularly scenic Gold Hill, the cobbled street made famous by the film director Ridley Scott. The street was the setting for an iconic television advertisement for 'Hovis' bread that was frequently broadcast in the 1970's and 1980's and is still instantly recognisable today.

Shaftesbury is on the site of the former Shaftesbury Abbey, although most of the remaining buildings in the town only date back to the 18th Century, as the older monuments did not stand the tests of time.

The town offers a range of leisure facilities including a variety of shops and a library. Shaftesbury Arts Centre also stages exhibitions, performances and workshops throughout the year. Shaftesbury also has two museums - Gold Hill Museum at the top of the iconic Gold Hill, and Shaftesbury Abbey Museum in the abbey grounds.
