Hay-on-Wye lies on the Welsh side of the Welsh/English border in the county of Powys. It's a small market town with a big heart and is often described as ‘the town of books'.

It's impossible to write about Hay-on-Wye without mentioning the annual Hay Festival. It's a major literary festival that has been running now for 29 years and celebrates great writing and authors from around the world. During the 10-day festival at the beginning of June, the town comes alive with visitors soaking up the fantastic literary atmosphere on offer as well as the stunning surrounding countryside and attractive town vistas.

Living at Readers Retreat means you'll be able to enjoy Hay-on-Wye's charm all year round. You'll have everything you need for day-to-day living close to hand as the town has a good selection of shops (including a Co-op and Spar), Post Office, boutiques, eateries and of course, book shops. There's also a bustling market every Thursday where you can treat yourself to delicious fresh local produce and grab a bargain. For more shopping choice, the cathedral city of Hereford is 21 miles away and Brecon is 15 miles.

For those who enjoy keeping fit, there's a leisure centre just over 4 miles from Hay-on-Wye. Gwernyfed Sports Centre, which is run and also used by Gwernyfed High School, offers a fitness suite, sports hall and multi-purpose sports pitches. Plus; the town is in the catchment to a number of primary schools, one of which is the Hay-on-Wye County Primary School – a highly effective ‘Green' school.

The great outdoors beckons…

Given that the town lies on the south-east bank of the beautiful River Wye and is within the north-eastern tip of the Brecon Beacons National Park, it's no surprise that the great outdoors is enjoyed by many who live in Hay-on-Wye. While away a few hours kayaking down idyllic river stretches, explore the majestic ruins of Hay Castle, challenge yourself to one of the many hill walks, or take a picnic to the local meadow beside the river beach and immerse yourself in a good book (you won't be spoilt for choice!).

We're proud to be building the first new homes in the town for many years and happy to be part of Hay-on-Wye's growing popularity as a fantastic place to call home.
