Dining

As a former coach stop for ancient travellers, Buntingford has more than its fair share of friendly inns and hostelries, including the Fox & Duck, the Black Bull, the Jolly Sailors, the Crown Inn and the Three Tuns. All offer a warm welcome, fine ales and great food.

The town also has a good selection of restaurants, with the Viceroy Asian, Buntingford Kitchen and Billings all highly recommended.

Education

Buntingford has a three tier school system, with Ofsted rated ‘outstanding’ first schools and middle school and a ‘good’ rated upper school and sixth form college. All lie within the town itself and all are within easy walking distance of The Maples.

Younger pupils have the choice of Layston C of E First School or Millfield First School, both feeding in to Edwinstree C of E Middle School, which in turn feeds Freman College and sixth form. Alternative seniors schools can be found at the ‘good’ rated Meridian School in Royston or the independent International Baccalaureate school St Edmunds in nearby Ware.

Leisure

There is plenty to do in the town, with Ward Freman pool and gym within walking distance of the development, a local football team and youth team and Barkway Park and East Herts golf clubs both just a short drive away. Buntingford also hosts a bi-annual summer carnival and a classic car show every autumn.

For evening entertainment, head for Stevenage Leisure Park, where you’ll find a Cineworld multi-screen cinema and a Hollywood Bowl bowling alley, along with a choice of popular family restaurants, from Pizza Hut to Prezzo, Nandos to KFC. Plus, of course, with London less then three quarters of an hour away, the shows of the West End and concerts at the O2 are all easily accessible.

Shopping

Buntingford High Street has an excellent selection of friendly independent shops and stores, and you’ll find a traditional market, dating back to the 14th century, held every Monday on Market Hill. For the freshest local produce, try Royston farmers’ market, held on the 3rd Friday of every month.

For a more extensive shopping trip, try the malls of Westgate Shopping Centre in Stevenage or Jackson Square, Bishop’s Stortford, or hop a train to London for the flagship stores of Oxford Street, the style of Carnaby Street, the tailoring of Saville Row and the exclusive boutiques of Mayfair.

Transport

Buntingford lies midway between the A1(M) and the M11, with the A10 bypassing the town to the west. Bishop Stortford, Stevenage, Letchworth and the county town of Hertford are all just over 10miles away, with Cambridge 25miles and London around 40miles.

The nearest station is at Royston, just 8miles along the A10 to the north of Buntingford. Royston station has over 340 park and ride spaces and regular peak time services direct to London Kings Cross in as little as 38minutes and Cambridge in just 15minutes.
