Facing Preston, and just south of the River Ribble, Penwortham is very much a self-contained community - yet it's just minutes from the centre of Preston, a vibrant university city with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, as well as an excellent choice of cinemas, theatres and museums. Penwortham itself has several primary schools and no less than three high schools, as well as several supermarkets - and it also has a leisure centre, which is part of Penwortham Priory Academy.

Local transport is excellent, with Preston being on the main West Coast Rail line between London and Glasgow. Trains to London can take as little as two hours and 15 minutes and Preston is within rapid rail commuting distance of Liverpool and Manchester. Local road networks are equally efficient, with the north-south M6 providing direct connections to Cumbria and the remainder of the North-West, whilst link motorways bring the Lancashire coast, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds within easy reach.

For local days out, Preston offers plenty of entertainment, as do nearby Blackburn and Blackpool. The Lake District is within comfortable driving distance, with the countryside of the Trough of Bowland, the Ribble Valley and the Yorkshire Dales all being equally accessible. Very close to home, the Ribble estuary is a National Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and home to an amazingly diverse number of wildfowl, which use the estuary as a feeding and over-wintering area.
