Leicestershire is a county in the Midlands, bordered on all sides by some of England's most well-known counties, including Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire. While the majority of the county is designated as rural or semi-rural, the principal city in the county the City of Leicester, from which the county takes its name, is heavily populated with 441,213 living in the wider Leicester area. Leicester is situated on the River Soar and close to the National Forest. Leicestershire has a population of 955,300, with the second largest population center after Leicester being Loughborough. The rest of the county is comprised of several larger towns and villages, which support the livestock farming that has a long history in the area. Red Leicester and Stilton cheeses are some of Leicestershire's best known contributions to British cuisine. Clothing production, particularly knitwear has a long history in the county, which continues today with the production of high-end clothing and textiles.
