Dining

For a small market town, Okehampton’s tourist trade means it has a surprising number of great places to eat. Trip Advisor lists almost 50 different eateries, with the Two Rivers Restaurant, The Countryman, The New Inn, The Red Lion, The Hog and Hedge, The Post Inn, Ma’ida and Rajpoot all highly recommended.

Education

Romansfield will benefit from a brand new primary school being built right next to the development, designed specifically for Okehampton’s growing population. Older pupils are just as well catered for, with Okehampton College rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, ensuring their education is in the best possible hands.

Leisure

With the 368sq miles of Dartmoor National Park right on your doorstep, there are endless possibilities for your leisure time. You can enjoy miles of way-marked walks around the Dartmoor tors for all levels of fitness, or for the less active, there is a regular heritage train service in the summer months, or you can just take a delightful drive through the countryside.

Closer to home, Okehampton boasts the New Carlton Cinema, Parklands Leisure Centre, Okehampton Golf Club and much more to keep you occupied, along with all the facilities and entertainment you would expect from a top tourist destination. It is even home to the second oldest Norman castle in the country.

Shopping

Okehampton shopping has grown to serve the tourist trade, with a choice of the modern Red Lion Yard shopping mall and traditional Victorian arcades. For out of town shopping, try the outlet stores at Mole Avon. There is a Sunday market in the town during the summer months, plus a Farmers’ Market every 1st and 3rd Saturday.

For a more extensive shopping trip, head for Exeter, where you’ll find the Princesshay, Guildhall and Harlequins shopping centres, as well as the designer bargains of the Atlantic Village Outlet in Bideford. Plymouth also offers a wide selection of shops, including Drake Circus in the heart of the city.

Transport

Okehampton lies close to the A30 trunk route, which now by-passes the town on a major dual carriageway. This links swiftly to Exeter, around 20miles away, and to Plymouth, via the A386, which is around 30miles away. Exeter is home to Exeter Airport, with flights across the UK and Europe, and you can also pick up the M5 here for all routes north and east.

Trains from Exeter reach Bristol in 1hr, London Paddington in as little as 2hrs 10mins and Birmingham in around 2½hours. Following the recent problems with the mainline from Exeter to Plymouth, where it was washed away at Dawlish, Network Rail are considering reinstating services via Okehampton as an alternative route, which would make the town even better connected.
