Bourne is a collection of stylish new apartments within a Grade II listed Edwardian estate. Located minutes from Chancery Lane station in an area that’s been at the forefront of the return to authentic city living, this is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the pleasures and the conveniences of contemporary, urban culture.

Constructed between 1901 and 1903, the Grade II listed Bourne Estate is one of the most celebrated examples of early public housing in London, a ground-breaking development by the London County Council’s Architect’s Department. Their work was very much ahead of its time and the design of this estate had an international influence. Planners and architects in Vienna took the Bourne Estate as inspiration when responding to the acute housing crisis following the First World War. Ironically, the solutions they developed under its influence became a model for the striking public housing and private mansion blocks built in central London in the 1930s.

The residential blocks of the original Bourne Estate sit around landscaped quadrangles shaded by mature trees. Their free ‘classical’ style incorporates pediments and stucco pilasters with occasional Arts & Crafts touches such as gabled walls, casement windows and decorative mouldings in the arched entrance ways. The use of occasional blue and glazed bricks sets off the predominantly red, orange and yellow stock. The fine brick detailing in the new additions emulate the care taken by the first architects and the new buildings respond to the old, creating a satisfying rhythm and hierarchy of spaces.
