Local Roots Bloxham can be traced back to Saxon times, probably taking its name from Blocc’s Ham, the Old English rendering of Blocc’s Home, and many of its medieval alleys, lanes, houses and cottages remain largely intact and give the village a very special, timeless, character. The impressive tower and spire of the beautiful St Mary’s Church were built in the 14th century, although some parts of the church are around 200 years older.
Village Life The village community supports a range of societies and clubs, from youth groups and local history to gardening and organising local transport. Bloxham has two popular traditional pubs, the Elephant and Castle and the Joiners Arms, as well as a museum of local history housed in one of the village’s oldest buildings.
Education & Health Bloxham C of E Primary School, described as good and highly inclusive by Ofsted inspectors, is located directly across the road from Woodlands, and the village also has a state secondary, the Warriner School, and the private Bloxham School. There is a GP surgery, Godswell Lodge, and a dentist a short walk away in Church Street.
Transport Buses between Chipping Norton and Banbury run along Tadmarton Road, adjacent to Woodlands, and through the village. Train services from Banbury operate to Birmingham Moor Street and London Marylebone, both less than an hour away, as well as to Manchester and Oxford. The development is just over five miles from the M40.
Shopping The village has a post office and newsagent, a pharmacy, a Co-op Food store, a hairdresser and a fish bar. All of them are within around ten minutes’ walk of Woodlands. A larger selection, from modern mall shopping to an ancient twiceweekly market, can be found in Banbury.
Recycling Facilities The Post Office in the High Street provides recycling bins for glass and cans, and most electrical items can be recycled at the Warriner School, around a mile from Woodlands.
Leisure & Recreation The beautiful countryside around Bloxham includes many superb attractions including the spectacular, moated Broughton Castle. Tadmarton Heath and Rye Hill golf courses are both within around two and a half miles of Woodlands, while for indoor recreation there are two leisure centres in Banbury that between them provide extensive gym, sports and swimming facilities.
