Scholes is less than four miles from the A629 and just nine from Huddersfield, with Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield all approximately 20 miles away. Buses between Holmfirth and Huddersfield
pass through the village approximately twice an hour, and there are a few additional local services between Scholes, New Mill and Holmfirth. Trains from Brockholes station, around three miles north of the village, run approximately hourly to Huddersfield, 15 minutes away, and to Sheffield.

Amenities in the village include a post office and general store, and a community Junior and Infant School rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted. Pupils from Scholes normally move on to Holmfirth High School, two miles to the north. The village has two traditional pubs, the Boot and Shoe and the White Horse, and an active cricket club with junior and ladies’ sides as well as a successful senior team. The area is also extremely popular with walkers and cyclists due to its superb countryside, reservoirs and riverside paths with magnificent views and diverse wildlife.

Holmfirth, a charming 20-minute walk from Holme View, is a popular tourist destination as well as a busy market town with a wide selection of shops and services, including Co-op and Lidl stores, pharmacies, a greengrocer, an off licence, newsagents, an ironmonger, banks, hairdressers, gift shops and other specialists. There is also an exceptionally wide choice of restaurants, bistros, cafés, takeaways and bars. Weekly markets are held in the town centre on Thursdays and Saturdays, selling fresh local produce and crafts, and there is also a monthly Farmers’ Market. New Mill, one and a half miles north of Scholes, also has a useful range of shops, including a large Co-op store, a family butcher and delicatessen, a newsagent and post office and a number of takeaways.

Gym, sports and swimming facilities are available at Holmfirth Pool and Leisure Centre, and Holmfirth Picturedrome, in the town centre, is a small, intimate music and film venue with a programme of live touring shows. Its associated bar, the Box Office, also features free live music. Oaklands Health Centre, a large full-time GP practice around a mile and a half from Holme View, shares a site with Holmfirth Dental Surgery, one of two dental surgeries in the town. The short trip into Huddersfield opens up a wider choice of high street shops, supermarkets, cinema and live music and drama, as well as delightful scenic trips on the Kirklees Light Railway.
