Tyne & Wear is a metropolitan county in the North East of England that is named for the two rivers that drain the area, Tyne and Wear. It was formed after 1974 and consists of South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and Sunderland. Much of the area included in the county was previously included in the jurisdiction of the counties of Northumberland and County Durham, divided by the River Tyne. The county is bordered by the North Sea on the East, Northumberland in the North and the county of Durham in the South. It is the 44th largest county in England. Attractions in the county include the Beamish Museum, MetroCentre and the Sage Gateshead. The county has a population of over a million people and an area of over 530 square kilometres.
