There is a choice of local golf courses just a few miles from Abergavenny. The Monmouthshire Golf Club is set against the beautiful scenery of the Usk Valley while the Wernddu is in one of the most picturesque positions and also has a floodlit driving range.

The nearby River Usk is widely renowned as one of the best salmon rivers in Wales, but if fishing is a little too sedentary, you could explore the outdoors by a different means. A short stroll will take you into the countryside, while longer walks could lead you to the top of one of several mountains. The Blorenge and The Sugarloaf provide spectacular views while The Skirrid has a steep initial climb, which then breaks out onto a long ridgeway ending by an old ruined chapel at the highest point.

If two legs aren’t enough, you could always take in one of the many horse riding centres in the area. Whether a gentle trot or a full blown gallop, what better way to see the beauty of the surrounding countryside? Or if you’re feeling really brave, you could launch yourself off Blorenge Mountain or nearby Hatterall Ridge – two of the best hang gliding and paragliding sites in Britain.
