Edinburgh City is the capital of Scotland, but in addition to being its most important city, is also a unitary authority. The city was given this status in 1994. It is the seat of the Scottish parliament and lies on the East coast of the Central Belt with the Firth of Forth near the North Sea being a close neighbour. It is largely based on the services sector, with banking being an important component of the economy since the establishment of the Bank of Scotland over 300 years ago. The area is served by Haymarket railway station, Edinburgh Park Station and Edinburgh Airport. The University of Edinburgh is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, along with being one of the oldest. The county is home to two professional football clubs, the Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian. A noted resident of Edinburgh was author J.K. Rowling, who began the Harry Potter series in an Edinburgh coffee shop. Find your new home in Edinburgh City today.
