An easy drive north of the town you can take a day out exploring the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and if you head south, you can spend a day along the coast of Mersea Island and in the Blackwater Estuary National Nature Reserve.
Colchester is in the north of Essex and its neighbours here are Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. The A12 is the key cross-country route, there are mainline trains from Colchester taking just under an hour to London Liverpool Street and running every 15 to 20 minutes. London Stansted Airport is just over 32 miles away – a car journey time of about 45 minutes.
