Falkirk is both a unitary authority council area in Scotland and a UK Parliament constituency. It shares a border with North Lanarkshire in the South West, Stirling in the North West, West Lothian in the South East and the Firth of Forth in the North Eastern region. It was formed in 1996 and was formerly a part of Stirlingshire. With a total area of 297 square kilometres, it is ranked 22nd in the country according to size. Falkirk is divided into area forums including Avonbridge, Redding and Maddiston. Running close to the county borders is the River Forth. Falkirk is a county constituency of the House of Commons for the parliament of the United Kingdom, giving it immense significance in the context of law and politics. The principal town is Falkirk.
