Neath
Neath began as a Roman fort called Nidum which was established around AD 75 along the River Neath. Cistercian monks founded Neath Abbey in 1130. It became one of the wealthiest monasteries in Wales. The historic ruins remain an attraction for visitors today.
Port Talbot
Located on the coast is Port Talbot, an industrial town known for its steelworks. Since the closure of the plant in late 2024, plans are in place to transform the site for future steel production. Port Talbot also features a popular sea front which spans 3 miles.
The town centre regeneration is underway to improve the Civic Square and refurbish the Princess Royal Theatre.

Briton Ferry
Briton Ferry is situated on the mouth of the River Neath where it enters Swansea Bay.
The town once had a floating dock designed by Marc Brunel. The dock’s lock gate and dock walls are now Grade II‑listed. Efforts to preserve and regenerate this industrial heritage site are ongoing.
Pontardawe
The name Pontardawe means Bridge on the Tawe. It began as a crossroads settlement where drovers’ routes from Neath, Llandeilo, Swansea, and Brecon intersected.
