Torfaen is a county borough in South Wales, situated within the historic county of Monmouthshire. It was established in 1996 following the reorganisation of local government in Wales. The county borough’s principal towns are Cwmbran, Pontypool and Blaenavon, together with a number of smaller communities spread across the surrounding valleys. Home to a population of around 90,000 people, Torfaen combines urban centres with residential and rural areas, creating a diverse local environment.

The area has a rich industrial heritage that played an important role in the development of South Wales during the Industrial Revolution. Coal mining, iron production and heavy manufacturing were once the backbone of the local economy, shaping the growth of its towns and communities. Blaenavon is particularly significant for its industrial history and is internationally recognised for its well-preserved ironworks and mining landscape, which reflect the area’s contribution to Britain’s industrial development.

Today, Torfaen has a more diverse economy, with employment centred on manufacturing, retail, public services, healthcare and light industry. The county borough benefits from good transport links to nearby Newport, Cardiff and the wider South Wales region, supporting commuting and business activity. Ongoing regeneration projects and investment in town centres, business parks and community facilities continue to strengthen the local economy while preserving Torfaen’s distinctive industrial heritage.
