West Midlands county, not to be confused with the West Midlands Region, is a small but densely populated county in the Mid-West of England that was formed in 1974 from parts of neighboring Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Staffordshire. There are seven metropolitan boroughs in the West Midlands, including Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and the Cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. The county is heavily urbanised, with a population of 2.27 million people, nearly half of which reside in Birmingham. While there is significant urbanisation, efforts have been made to preserve 'green belts' in the county, the largest being the Meridan Gap that separates Coventry from the principal areas of the West Midlands conurbation, and smaller belts between Walsall, Birmingham and West Bromwich. The county has numerous rivers that cross its borders, including the River Tame, as well as the Rivers Sowe and Stour, which flow through Coventry and the West of the county, respectively.
