Living and buying property in Exeter

Exeter, in located in the heart of Devon, and dates back to Roman times. It’s a vibrant city with a famous 11th-century cathedral and a popular university, and well known for its attractive cobbled streets, buzzing nightlife, excellent shopping and beautiful surrounding countryside.

Exeter was awarded Fairtrade City status in 2004, and it had a district area population of 117,773 in the 2011 Census.

Transport links

Exeter is very well served thanks to its connection to the M5 motorway and the Devon Expressway that offers access to the A30 and South Devon.

Two main train stations (Exeter Central Station and Exeter St David’s) conveniently located in the city centre link Exeter to the UK’s major cities, with London only two-and-a-half hours away.

Exeter also has an airport in its outskirts that operates domestic and international flights. Coach and bus services also operate from all over the UK to Exeter.

Things to do

You’ll never run out of things to do in Exeter. The city is full of history and heritage, but it has still transformed into a modern and stylish spot that is popular with tourists and local residents.

St Peter's Cathedral is an impressive example of Gothic architecture and has the longest unbroken vault ceiling in the world, making it one of the most popular attractions in Exeter.

Near to the High Street, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery offers magnificent original displays dating back to the Victorian era. Only a 15-minute walk from the city centre, Quayside is a picturesque place rich with history, stunning architecture and live events.

You will find plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes to choose from. In addition, you can enjoy a wide range of activities there such as boat trips, kayaking, canoeing and fishing, cycling, climbing and Red Coat guided tours.

Shopping in Exeter is a real treat thanks to its diverse range of shops, from trendy boutiques to high street big brands. Visitors enjoy the city’s various shopping centres such as the Harlequins Centre, the undercover Guildhall Shopping Centre and the famous Princesshay Centre.

The latter offers over 60 shops as well as restaurants and bars near to the high street. For a more historical setting, you can go to the Cathedral Close or Cathedral Yard and enjoy their town and country fashion shops, crafts, books, paintings and antiques. Finally, Fore Street offers an alternative and specialty shopping experience.

Employment

During the 19th century, Exeter's main industry was wool, but this became less important over the 20th century. Nowadays, Exeter is an important business centre in the region, and 35,000 people commute to the city daily from surrounding towns. Many of these people live in some of the new home developments that have been growing around Exeter over the last ten years.

After being bombed heavily in WWII, Exeter's city centre was rebuilt following the war, and it is now a large business centre.

Exeter has been the home of the Met Office since 2004, and this is one of the biggest employers in the city. Other important employers include the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, Devon County Council and the University of Exeter.

The Princesshay shopping centre houses over 120 units, and the retail sector is another important source of employment in Exeter.

Education

University of Exeter is the most famous educational institution here, with two campuses in the city. Exeter is also one of the sites of the University of Plymouth.

In addition, there are over 20 primary schools and five state secondary schools here including Isca Academy, St James School and West Exe School. There are also a number of independent schools in the city, including Exeter School, Exeter Tutorial College and The Maynard School.
