Hunsdon was the 2011 Winner of the Village of the Year in Hertfordshire Eastern Division and Hertfordshire Overall Winner. This charming village is now home to Liberty Fields, a development of 3 and 4 bedroom homes. Hunsdon is full of history and the village centre itself contains many old houses, some known to date back to at least the 15th century, and the village was registered in the Domesday Book in 1086.
During the Second World War a large area of farmland to the east of Hunsdon was built upon and became RAF Hunsdon. The airfield provided a major contribution to the war efforts and its sorties were involved in many significant missions. Operation Jericho is perhaps the most well known mission, where Amiens Prison was tactically bombed by Allied aircraft to release members of the French Resistance and political prisoners on the eve of their execution. Led by Captain Charles Percy Pickard, the mission was also the subject of a film “The Jailbreakers” in 1946. Liberty Fields nestles next to Hunsdon Airfield and has been named in honour of this historic location.
The village of Hunsdon offers a selection of amenities including a post office shop, beauty salon, public house and restaurant. There is a pre-school and primary school just minutes away from Liberty Fields, and a vast array of other schools including secondary and colleges within a few minutes’ drive.
The local surroundings offer lovely countryside walks and further afield there is Rye Meads Nature Reserve and Lee Valley Park.
