Heydon sits on the chalk ridge that runs along the Cambridgeshire–Essex border, about 140 metres above sea level. That makes it one of the highest villages in Cambridgeshire, and the lanes around it open onto long views across rolling farmland, the kind of views south Cambridgeshire is not usually known for. It is a small village of around 200 people, with winding lanes, period cottages and thatched roofs. At its centre is Holy Trinity Church, partly rebuilt after it was bombed in 1940. Village life centres on the King William IV, a 16th-century inn on Chishill Road, just along from West Croft. It reopened under new owners in early 2026 and serves food alongside changing cask ales. Heydon Grange Golf & Country Club is on the edge of the parish. Neighbouring Great Chishill, less than a mile away, has another pub and its landmark windmill. For walkers and cyclists, the surrounding countryside is the main draw. The Harcamlow Way long-distance path passes through the village, and the Icknield Way runs along the ridge nearby. RSPB Fowlmere nature reserve, a few miles north, has otters, kingfishers and reed buntings. Therfield Heath, outside Royston, offers open chalk downland with wide views. Heydon is a genuinely quiet rural village. Families are in the catchment for Fowlmere Primary School and Melbourn Village College. The result is real countryside with Cambridge, a mainline station and the M11 all within easy reach. WHAT IS HEYDON CLOSE TO? Royston is about 12 minutes away by car. The market town has supermarkets, independent shops, gyms, cafés and a regular market. Its station has direct trains to London King’s Cross, with the fastest services taking under an hour, as well as trains to Cambridge. Meldreth and Great Chesterford stations are also within about five miles, and Great Chesterford has services towards Cambridge and London Liverpool Street. Cambridge is about 13 miles away, around 20 to 25 minutes by car. Saffron Walden is to the south-east. London Stansted Airport is about 26 miles away (around 30 minutes), and Luton Airport is about 32 miles. The M11, A505 and A10 are all close by.
