Staffordshire, also known as 'Staffs' is a county in the West Midlands bordered by the ceremonial counties of Derbyshire, Cheshire, Leicestershire and Worcestershire, among others. Although the county enjoys spectacular moorland landscapes and has part of the National Forest within the county borders, Staffordshire is landlocked. The principle city within the county is Stoke-on-Trent, often just called Stoke, which is situated along the Trent and Mersey Canal off of the River Trent, one of the largest rivers in England. While Stoke-on-Trent is administered separately to the rest of the county, other cities and towns in the county include Lichfield, known for its beautiful cathedrals, Stafford, the county town, Cannock, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Burton upon Trent and Tamworth. The population of Staffordshire is just over 1 million, with 240,636 of those living in Stoke-on-Trent. The county is home to a number of historic and heritage sites, including Croxden Abbey in Croxden, Tamworth Castle and a number of historic sites from Roman times.
