Greater Manchester was created in 1974 and encompasses one of the UK's largest metropolitan areas. Although the county, located in the North West of England, is quite small it is home to 2.6 million people. The county comprises mostly urban areas, although small pockets of rural and semi-rural areas exist around the ten metropolitan boroughs of the county, which include Manchester City, Salford, Trafford, Rochdale, Oldham, Bolton, Bury, Wigan, Stockport and Tameside. Greater Manchester is also considered a ceremonial county, and adjoins other ceremonial counties on its landlocked borders, including Derbyshire, Cheshire, Lancashire, West Yorkshire and Merseyside. Greater Manchester is overwhelmingly urban-centric, with Manchester City Center forming the county's central business district. The densely-populated county is home to a complex transportation network to service its urban population, and is one of the most multicultural counties in the UK besides being home to one of the best known football clubs in the world, Manchester United F.C.
